The Bird and the Bee

I’ve just discovered a marvellous band called ‘The Bird and the Bee’ driving home from work… they have quite a typical style and I just love the 60’s touch in all it!

and alive performance:

If you have ever listened to jazz you must know this song. Every jazz band worth something plays it although it;s not easy to play it right.

What you might know is the origin of this song.

The original was written by Joseph Kosma and Jacques Prévert in 1945 actually in French and actually under the name “Les feuilles mortes” (Dead Leaves) later translated into English by Johnny Mercer.

In 1955, Roger Williams hit the charts scoring a number one hit by the instrumental version - which is terrible and maximally annoying in my opinion.

Check a few versions!

By Keit Jarret:

or by new talent Zack Kim on two guitars:

or by Stan Getz, my favourite saxophonist:

etc, etc, the fascination never ends.

Unquestionably this is one of the most “used” jazz tunes and I hope we will hear a lot of great versions ;)
